Implantable Collamer Lens or ICL surgery is an eye procedure used on patients to improve their vision by implanting artificial lenses in the eye. The ICL surgery is done for the treatment of,

  • Farsightedness.
  • Nearsightedness.
  • Astigmatism.

In ICL eye surgery, an artificial lens is positioned between the natural lens and the iris by the surgeon. The lens works towards the natural lens by refracting light, which helps bring clarity to the vision.
The artificial lens is created from collagen type called Collamer and plastic. ICL surgery is useful in eliminating the requirement of wearing contact lenses.

What Is ICL Surgery?

Implantable Collamer Lens is an innovative thin lens that acts like a contact lens but is implanted surgically. Once implanted, the lens won’t hinder the natural movement of the eye and is easily removed.

ICL surgery is ideal for patients under 40 years of age as it is a low-risk treatment and lasts for a long time. The procedure is best for patients with short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism because the cornea is sensitive and must be treated safely.

Types of ICL Surgery

ICL eye surgery is recommended to improve sight and eliminate the necessity of wearing contact lenses. There are two types of ICLs.

  • Posterior Chamber Phakic lenses.
  • Anterior Chamber Phakic lenses.

Generally, posterior chamber ICL, also known as EVO Visian ICL, is recommended. The EVO Visian ICL is developed from a soft, biocompatible collagen polymer and is incredibly adjustable. The spherical ICL is used to correct moderate to high myopia. The posterior chamber ICL is placed in between the natural lens and iris.

Anterior Chamber Phakic Lenses, on the other hand, are positioned on the iris in the eye. In this type of ICL, an artificial lens is implanted on the natural lens. Anterior Chamber Phakic Lenses are effective in treating myopia. Anterior Chamber Phakic Lenses are made of Polymethylmethacrylate. These are convex lenses and are monofocal, meaning the lens has one focus point.

Why Do People Choose ICL Surgery?

ICL surgery is considered one of the best options for a permanent lens for the eyes that eliminates the need to wear glasses. Some of the reasons for choosing ICL surgery are as follows:

  • The artificial lens is a biocompatible Collamer that works perfectly with the structure of the natural eye and won’t affect it anyway.
  • Unlike other surgeries, ICL surgery does not require removing the corneal tissue but works well with the natural eye. The lens is developed in the eye and placed behind the iris.

Do’s and Don’t after ICL surgery

Here’s what you should and shouldn’t do after ICL surgery.

  1. Apply eye drops as prescribed.
  2. Wear protection glasses as recommended whenever going outside.
